Our goal is to choose talks that are interesting, educational, thought-provoking, and engaging. No product pitches or business promotion please. What are you passionate about? Be sure to include a description. More cleverness = more votes.

The top 6 presentations by popular vote will get in (pending discretion of the Ignite Fort Collins Team). The remaining 8 presentations will be selected by the Ignite Fort Collins Team based on a number of factors, including diversity of topics and speakers.

Voting and submissions will close on February 6.

    • The Making of a FoCo LoCo BoBo

How does your lifestyle compare to that of the average American? When my wife and I got married, we agreed to restrict our household spending to no more than the U.S. average. For over a year, we have tracked, recorded, and categorized every financial transaction down to the penny, comparing our consumption patterns against data from families across America. I'll share the results of our ongoing experiment -- and how you can become a FoCo LoCo BoBo yourself.

        • Why you should beet, squash, and kale your lawn.

We've lost touch with our roots–the roots of knowing how to grow food for ourselves and our immediate communities. Your yard doesn't have to be a fruitless waste of space (and water for that matter). I want to talk about how YOU can be part of the "Food Not Lawns" revolution by changing your yard space into growing space.

Or “No, No, you’re not thinking; you’re just being logical” Niels Bohr

What if there really is a God and it’s not some guy hanging out in the clouds taking notes? What if it really is The Force and the what if The Force is really with you? I’ll explore the boundary between religion, spirituality, quantum physics, metaphysics and humor (because I’m funny that way). It took me a long time to find a spiritual path that worked for my heart and my head-maybe you aren't so strange after all!

I used to be gung-ho about the Kill Your Television movement, until a friend took the time to show me why NOT watching tv can be bad for you. Find out why you should be watching tv, too.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead

No matter who you are and what you aspire to be or do in life, we all like the feeling of making a difference. Fort Collins ranks #6 in the nation in volunteerism, and Colorado has one of the largest nonprofit sectors per capita in the country with over 19,000 nonprofit organizations doing important work throughout the state.
With so many options in our community, how can we get that warm fuzzy feeling we all strive…

I'm been a writer in the collegian and have also published a few poems. I'm finishing my studies in sociology and creative writing. My talk will focus how beyond living in a community, we are also immersed in our fiction. There is an attraction to watching the fantastical, surreal aspects of others imaginations up on a screen, or having a story procured through a string of words. In the multiple ways we criticize our fiction, as individuals we draw on aspects of the made up to give breathe to what we don't define as real. in this talk I'll explain…

                      • When Prudes Talk About Sex

My daughter starts middle school next year. We have to start talking about sex. . .have started, actually. It is mortifying for both of us. I want to do better, but my own sex education was delivered, badly, by nuns and a very prudish mother. This PG (or PG-13, or R. Varying degrees of audience prudishness makes all ratings subjective) is my attempt to learn from every awkward discussion about sex I've ever had with other people to come up with the right way to give this information to my kids. So that they can be less awkward and prudish…

3D printing is moving from expensive manufacturing to small shops and hobbyist shops. With a CAD program, a person can design something they envision, then they can feed it to a printer, which will then build the item layer by layer. Or, you can go to a number of websites and download other people's designs and print those out.

Traditionally maps have been built by professionals and sold to or licensed to the masses. If the map contained incorrect data, or didn’t cover information you needed, you were out of luck. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is different. Thousands of volunteers have come together from around the world to create a free map that anyone can use for free, and to which anyone can contribute. What Wikipedia is to encyclopedias, OSM is to maps. Why do we do it? How can you join this revolution?

We share our bodies with a variety of single-celled organisms that outnumber our own cells 10 to 1. Have you heard of fecal transplants? Gut bacterial from a healthy person is put into the gut of a person suffering from a C. diff (Clostridium difficile) infection, an affliction that kills 14,000 people a year. A research project to study their effectiveness was recently halted because the procedure worked so well, it was decided the people in the control group should get the experimental procedure as well. Come learn about the fascinating ways our lives are affected by the microorganisms that…

I learned some ways Fort Collins evolving coffee culture compares to Europe, and also how European countries differ from each other in how they experience coffee. I'll share some highlights from the cities I visited, which includes photos of latte art and cafes, some stories, and some insights. Cities will likely include Paris, Florence,…

After playing Candyland or Chutes and Ladders ad nauseum I was ready to harm somebody. My family and I entered the world of strategy table games and have never regretted it. You don't have to suffer the same fate. Engage your brain, talk trash and earn bragging rights.

There are many approaches on how to prevent yet more unpredictable killings in more schools, theaters, and malls by suicidal murders. First responders can't get there in time. Just as we have crowd-sourcing, where many software developers cocreate an awesome application, and crowd-funding where everyone, not just the elite Angels and VCs, can now fund startups, let's adopt crowd-courage where the collective power of many choosing to harness their courage can overcome fear and deter public violence.
